A Guide to Beyoncé’s 'Lemonade'
This is all kinds of amazing! An librarian from NY has created an information and resource guide to support ‘further research into Beyoncé’s literary, film and history references in her visual album Lemonade.’
Jenny Ferretti, a Digital Initiatives Librarian at the Maryland Institute College of Art, tweeted in late April that she had published a LibGuide on Beyoncé’s Lemonade. She said her reason for putting together the references is down to learning more about opinions, perspectives, and ideas, “I wanted to hear more of the Malcolm X speech included in the visual album’s “Anger” chapter. I knew the women holding pictures of young black men in the “Forgiveness” chapter were mothers of victims of police violence and profiling, but I wanted to make sure I knew the names of their sons. Are references such as these lost if they are not understood?”
From styling and creative decisions, Ferretti was captured by the entire body of work and had a lot of questions such as what was the cultural backdrop? What were the inspirations behind the images used? What were the main influences and samples used? From these questions, she saw an opportunity to create an guide in information literacy.
